Background of the Study

Non-pharmacological pain management strategies, such as relaxation techniques, guided imagery, physical therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, are critical tools in nursing care, especially for patients who may be at risk of opioid dependence or adverse effects from medication. In Bauchi State, where healthcare resources are limited, non-pharmacological strategies are increasingly important for managing both acute and chronic pain.

Nurses play an essential role in employing non-pharmacological strategies to manage pain, particularly in settings where access to medications may be limited. This study explores the strategies used by nurses in Bauchi State healthcare facilities to manage pain without relying solely on pharmacological treatments.

Statement of the Problem

While non-pharmacological strategies have proven to be effective in pain management, they may be underutilized or improperly implemented due to a lack of training or resources in Bauchi State. This study investigates the current use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies by nurses and assesses the effectiveness of these approaches in improving patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the non-pharmacological pain management strategies used by nurses in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological strategies in managing pain in patients.

  3. To assess the barriers that prevent nurses from using non-pharmacological strategies effectively.

Research Questions

  1. What non-pharmacological pain management strategies are used by nurses in Bauchi State healthcare facilities?

  2. How effective are non-pharmacological strategies in managing pain in patients in Bauchi State?

  3. What barriers do nurses face in utilizing non-pharmacological pain management strategies?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Non-pharmacological strategies significantly reduce pain in patients in Bauchi State healthcare facilities.

  2. Barriers such as inadequate training and lack of resources hinder the effective use of non-pharmacological pain management strategies by nurses in Bauchi State.

  3. Nurses in Bauchi State healthcare facilities effectively manage pain using non-pharmacological strategies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in various healthcare facilities in Bauchi State. Limitations may include variability in the availability of training and resources across different hospitals in the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Non-Pharmacological Pain Management: Pain management strategies that do not involve medications, including techniques like relaxation, physical therapy, and cognitive-behavioral interventions.

  • Nurse-Led Interventions: Interventions initiated and carried out by nurses to manage pain, such as guiding patients through relaxation techniques or physical exercises.
